Makwanpur is one of the disaster prone districts in the country. In 2002 floods and landslides claimed 135 lives with enormous lost of land and property. Traditional slash and burn farming practiced by the community, illegal timber trade across the border, and forest fires have exacerbated soil erosion and deforestation. Disasters repeated themselves in various place of Makwanpur district due to the incessant heavy monsoon rainfall in the year 2003 and in the year of 2004, the floods and landslides clamed 23 lives and destroyed large amount of land and property again.
ETSC has four areas of work that are urgently needed with specific goals and objectives which define expected outcomes and impacts of the activities. Relief, Rehabilitation, Preparedness and Children’s school.
Rationale:
- The need of immediate relief to the victim's is to provide food, clothing's and sheiter as a humanitarian objective for survival.
- To develop skill that will assist families to develop their food security strategies, so that families became food secure and have resources to educate their children and have a fuller more productive factor life.
- Through a "Food to Learn and Earn Programme", to support the rehabilitation and reconstruction of public school/health post buildings and water systems damaged by the flood and landslide that occurred in 20 and have been neglected while people struggle to survive.
- Through last 21 years of development experience in this area, Makwanpur is more and more become affected by different calamities. To minimize the effects of these natural calamities community preparedness is the most important, awareness of what people are able to do in preparation for disaster and creating choices which allow people in disaster prowan areas to participate in a disaster preparedness programme.
